Ingrid Martins, Owner
After graduating from Ohio State University with a degree in finance, Ingrid moved to Boston, where she worked as a bank consultant for 3 years then moved to NYC, where she worked as a bond trader for 2 years. When the bond market crashed, she resigned and decided to make a change in her life. On spur of the moment plans, she set sail on a private yacht with then boyfriend (future husband!) and sailed for 3 years in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas. Aboard the yachts, Ingrid worked as a chef where she learned how to cook.
After several years of traveling by sea, Ingrid and her husband returned to Newport, where she began working part time for a catering company. After a few years, her passion for the industry blossomed; Ingrid thought to herself “I can do this!” The next day she took out a $250 cash advance, which was used to buy business cards and menus. Blue Rocks was born in 1992. “I live right near my business in Newport’s fifth ward and I love being a local. I know almost everybody by name. My kids and their friends come in every day to our market. Newport has so many different types of people. Sailors, artists, Irish descendants, people from all over the world. It is a true melting pot.”
The History of Blue Rocks
Initially, Blue Rocks worked out of a church kitchen on a per diem basis. By 1996, the kitchen facilities had grown too small, and Blue Rocks moved to Aquidneck Ave. in Middletown, where we grew the business into a premier wedding and yachting event caterer. By late 2006, Blue Rocks was looking to own its own property, and it moved to our current location at 7 Carroll Ave. in Newport. Here we have a great kitchen, lots of storage space for our props, equipment and serving items, and have a wonderful retail market.
